That One Time the Landscape Changed, a nomadic art program, took place throughout the province of Groningen between October '24ย and May '25. Eight artists are immersing themselves in the northern landscape, researching its developments and changes, whileย following the footsteps of De Ploeg*.ย

The nomadic program has an experimental character. Each artist conducts artistic research in their own way while involvingย De Ploeg and the history, transformation, and future of theย Groningen landscape. Based on this research, they develop new works, which will be exhibited in a final showcase and symposiumย in Wehe-den Hoorn on 17 May. 2025
That One Time the Landscape Changed kicked off with a Wadloop Wandering, during which all the artists presented work while walking on the mudflats in Noordpolderzijl. After that, a three-day residency took place at the Kunstkerk in Warffum with Klaudija Ylaitฤ—ย and Hedwich Rooks. In January a second residency with Toni Brell, Olivia Dโ€™Cruz, Megan Hadfield, and Lila Bullen-Smith took place in Lauwersoog. In March, in Ulrum, a third three-day residency will take place with Kamilฤ— ฤŒesnaviฤiลซtฤ— and Mylan Hoezen.ย  During the program, four newspapers are published that delve into the program and share the artists's practices and research.ย

Developed with Jorien Ketelaar, the nomadic program brought us back together. Being previous classmates at Academy Minerva in Groningen, we always had a knack for organizing and working with others. This was a perfect opportunity to express our recent thoughts and ideas about the changing northern landscape and commission eightย artists, which we admire and are inspired by. The program we created allowed us to experiment with a format, write a funding application, and commission artists while staying true to our artistic expression. It also gave us the chanceย to work with Roemte Groningen, Kunstcentrum van de Ploeg,ย Shoot Media, Jeroen Klootsema,ย Heleen Haijtema, Kusntkerk Warffum, Wadlooptochtenย Dijkstra, and others! Thank you to everybody involved <3
That one time the landscape changed is a nine-month nomadic program featuring eight artists leading up to the opening of Kunstcentrum De Ploeg, min id-2025. The program is curated by Radina Kordova and Jorien Ketelaar and is made possible with support from Kunstraad Groningen, the Mondriaan Fund, Beringer Hazewinkel, the Emma Fund, and the JM Fund. With special thanks to Roemte for their advice in developing the program plan.

*ย De Ploeg is a Groningen-based artists' movement founded in 1918, which flourished during the 1920s and 1930s. The artists of De Ploeg were known for their bold experiments with color, form, and expression, portraying the landscapes, cityscapes, and rural life of Groningen. How do today'sย artists connect with this region and the mindset of De Ploeg?
